Former Gwinnett assisted living facility employee charged with theft and exploitation of the elderly

Gwinnett County Police Department Detectives report that they have arrested Paulette Smith, a former employee of Atria Park of Tucker, an assisted living facility, for theft and exploitation of an at-risk adult. Smith is accused of stealing cash from an 81-year-old female patient suffering from dementia.

According to a press release from GCPD, the charges stem from an investigation that began in July after a family member reported that cash was missing from the victim’s room. They had left money there for activities at the facility. A surveillance camera placed in the room by the family allegedly recorded evidence of the alleged theft.

GCPD are asking any other possible victims to contact GCPD’s Criminal Investigation Division at 770-513-5300.

“Our elderly citizens are some of the most vulnerable to crime and exploitation. The police department wants to encourage family and friends of at risk citizens to be proactive in ensuring their safety and well-being,” Cpl. Matthew Williamson, public information officer with GCPD, said in the press release.
