Georgia DOT restricts lane closures for Thanksgiving Travel

GAINESVILLE, Ga.,- Good news for travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday. The Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstate highways and primary state roads in northeast Georgia from 6 a.m. Wednesday, November 22 through 5 a.m. Monday, November 27. Similar restrictions will be in place for Christmas and New Year’s.

Safety is Georgia DOT’s number one priority, and District Engineer Brent Cook, P.E. out of the Gainesville office encourages drivers to drive alert by putting down the distractions.

“Thanksgiving is the start of the busy shopping season, we want folks to be safe out on the roads. Please buckle up, put down the phone, keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road,” said Cook.

Georgia roadway fatalities total 1330 to date, many of these are results of preventable crashes.
