The swearing in Thursday of Mayor-elect Rey Martinez has been touted as a historic occasion as it will be the first time in both Gwinnett, which is majority minority, and Walton County, in which a hispanic resident has been elected mayor. As a result, Loganville City Hall is expecting a large crowd at the January City Council meeting on Jan. 11, 2018. In addition to Martinez, Councilman Danny Ford, who has been reelected, and newly-elected Anne Huntsinger and Lisa Newberry also will be taking the Oath of Office before taking their seats on the council. This will take place after outgoing Mayor Dan Curry and the current city council take care of any old business. It also will be the last meeting for Councilman Mark Kiddoo who chose not to run for reelection last year.

Loganville City Manager Danny Roberts said there would be a reception with some refreshments following the Swearing-In Ceremony. Martinez defeated Donna Jones, wife of Loganville’s former mayor, councilman and city manager in November. It will not be his first swearing-in ceremony in Loganville having already served two and a half full terms on the Loganville City Council before stepping down earlier this year to run for mayor. He also was sworn in two years ago to serve as a commissioner on the advisory board for the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity and chaired the “Hispanics for Trump” campaign in Georgia during the 2016 presidential campaign of President Donald Trump. Martinez and his wife were attendees at the inauguration of the President in January this year.
