Monroe resident Susan Sykes and her 15-year-old daughter, Sarah, are organizing a 5K Run/Walk Fundraiser for Syke’s niece, Cali, who is battling Stage 3 Breast Cancer.
“Cali was diagnosed just before her 21st birthday and has already undergone IVF treatments in order to harvest her eggs. After 16 rounds, she will have a mastectomy and then begin daily radiation for 8 weeks. Her road is long but she is keeping a fantastic attitude and so far her body is being very receptive to treatments,” Sykes said.
A Facebook page, It takes a Village, established to follow Cali’s journey, notes that she and her family received the devastating news on Monday, Oct. 31 last year that she had been diagnosed with Invasive Ductile Carcinoma (breast cancer). What they know at this time is that she is stage 3A, they believe her lymph nodes may also be affected. The great news is her bones and other organs (besides ovaries and nodes) are clear and the doctor feels confident that Cali’s cancer is curable.
The 5K Run is at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, beginning at Childer’s Park in Monroe, Ga. Registration is a 7:30 a.m. The cost is $20 to pre-register, $25 the day of the race. All participants who pre-register by March 31 will receive a T-Shirt. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to Cali’s family to help with any and all expenses that they incur.
