A motorcyclist was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital on Saturday following a wreck on Highway 78 near the Cherry Hill Road exit. Monroe Public Safety Director Keith Glass said it was a single vehicle wreck with the motorcycle rider vs gravel on the road. His condition is not known, but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
Witnesses reported seeing a lot of motorcycles and several police officers on the scene, causing some to question whether it was possibly a police chase. But that was not the case, according to officials who report the wreck happened while a group of motorcyclists were on a ride between Athens and Monroe. The bikers stopped when one of them wrecked. Monroe Assistant Fire Chief Bill Owens said that fire officials were out on a call when the call first came in, resulting in police officers being the first to arrive on the scene.
