Update: Mountain Creek Church Road crash Wednesday was a fatality

Georgia State Patrol Post 46 Assistant Commander Christoph Ayers confirmed that the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Mountain Creek Church Road and Cap Jackson Road in Walton County at about 6:30 Wednesday morning involved a single fatality.

“A Volvo SUV was traveling westbound on W.M. Cap Jackson Rd. A Subaru Forester was traveling northbound on Mountain Creek Church Road. The Volvo failed to yield after stopping at the stop sign and drove into the path of the Subaru. The front of the Volvo struck the middle left of the Subaru. The impact caused the Subaru to rotate clockwise and exited the east shoulder of the roadway and overturned,” Ayers said. “The Subaru driver was ejected, and the vehicle came to a final rest on top of the driver, causing fatal injuries. The Volvo came to a final rest at the area of initial impact.”

Ayers said the next of kin of the driver has been notified. He has been identified as Thomas Smith. The driver of the volvo is identified as Melissa Johnson. She is charged with 2nd degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield after stopping at a stop sign.

A fundraiser has been established to help the family of Thomas Smith deal with the tragedy.

WALTON COUNTY, GA (Feb. 25, 2026) – At 7. 55 a.m. Walton County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Craig League is reporting that Mountain Creek Church Road and William Cap Jackson Road are currently closed due to a crash.

“At 6:26 a.m. WCFR responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at Mountain Creek Church Road and William Cap Jackson Road. Critical injuries are reported,” League said. “(Georgia State Patrol) is working the scene.”

League said that the intersection of Mountain Creek Church Road and William Cap Jackson Road remains closed at this time.
