Gary Wernecke, age 88 of Loganville, GA, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026. A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church, 3200 Brooks Drive, Snellville with Father Cyriac Mattathilanickal, M.S. presiding. Interment followed at Gwinnett Memorial Park, 925 Lawrenceville Highway, Lawrenceville.
Gary was raised on a Kansas farm where hard work wasn’t taught so much as lived. He found purpose in tending to animals and working in his yard. He served as a medic in the Air Force in the 1960’s and later spent 35 years working for Union Pacific. Gary was very involved in the community, serving as PTO President for his children at Windsor Elementary. He also served as HOA President and was very involved in the AARP Chapter.
Gary was honored as the 1994 Gwinnett County Senior of the Year and was as an active member of St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church, where he served as President of the Senior Group. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Joseph Wernecke; parents, Earl and Esther (Laudeman) Wernecke. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joan Wernecke of Loganville; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly (Don) Sivinski of Suwanee and Michelle (Mike) Marchman of Loganville; grandchildren, Sarah (Phil) Cockriel, Noah Sivinski, Amber Marchman, and Christopher Marchman; great grandchildren, Gavin Marchman and Lennon Marchman; many cousins and extended family members.
