‘Protect and serve’ means different things to different people

Sheriff’s deputies are tasked with protecting life and property, enforcing state and local laws, and maintaining public safety, primarily within their county jurisdiction. Their responsibilities also include patrolling unincorporated areas, managing the county jail, and serving court-related documents.

But sometimes, they go above and beyond. Such was the case this past weekend with Walton County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Robert Shuman, who was caught taking that oath to “Protect and Serve” seriously.

A passerby captured a photo of Shuman doing just that as people battled the heat wave that has enveloped much of the region, including Walton County.

As reported on the WCSO’s Facebook page, “At the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, serving others goes beyond answering calls for service. It’s about treating every person with dignity, leading with compassion, and doing the right thing, even when no one is looking,”

The photo, which was sent to WCSO by the passerby, showed Lt. Shuman taking time out of his shift to provide a man, who was resting in the shade of a tree in an effort to escape the heat, with a few necessities to help him cope with the extreme temperatures.

“We’re proud of you, Lt. Shuman,” WCSO wrote on the Facebook page.

It is one of those simple acts of kindness that likely would have gone unnoticed were it not for the passerby who captured the moment and took the time to share it with WCSO—a reminder that these moments of compassion by law enforcement officers do not always go unseen.
