Storm damage in Monroe Friday shut down Alcovy Street for several hours and left some in the Alcovy Street/Ammons Bridge Road area without power. It also left some damage in its wake, however officials report that nobody was injured and the damage was mostly just trees and power lines.

“A few roofs were damaged, a vehicle was damaged, and an a/c unit was crushed – no injuries,” Walton County Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director JB Whelchel said.

Initially, officials thought it was possibly a downburst that caused the damage in that area during the storm but Whelchel said it was mostly straight line winds.

“(National Weather Service) says it could have been between 50-60mph long gusts,” Whelchel said.

The storms, some of them strong, continued through the remainder of the weekend and the NWS says to expect more of the same through the rest of this week.

According to the NWS in its predictions for the local area, “Numerous to widespread thunderstorms are expected this afternoon
and evening. Some storms may become strong to severe and capable of producing gusty to damaging winds, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall. “Tuesday through Sunday… numerous to widespread thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday. Any storms that form will be capable of producing gusty winds, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall. Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are likely each day through Saturday.”
