Update: Officials report Alcovy Street likely to remain closed for several hours after tree came down on car and power lines

UPDATE: At 6:30 p.m. Monroe Fire Chief Andrew Dykes shared a photo of the damage on Alcovy Street and said crews are reporting that the road is expected to be closed for another five to six hours.

UPDATE: Walton County and the City of Monroe is reporting that Walton County Emergency Management has been in communication with the National US National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia concerning a downburst that occurred associated with recent thunderstorms. They report multiple trees are down near the Monroe Golf Course and Ammonds Bridge Road causing the roadway to be blocked and power disruptions.

WALTON COUNTY, GA (July 10,2026) – Walton County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Craig League reports that here were some significant storm winds earlier this afternoon in the Ammons Bridge Road, Alcovy Street area. Both in the City of Monroe and areas in the County just outside of the city.

“Multiple trees are down and multiple houses have sustained damage. WCFR is assisting Walton County EMA with damage assessment,” League said, adding that he believes Monroe Utilities and Public Works are busy with a tree that was reported down earlier this afternoon on Alcovy Street. “Ammons Bridge Road is closed at Claiborne Way.. and the area is getting another round of storms as we speak.”

The National Weather Service at Peachtree City issued the following Significant Weather Advisory until 5:15 p.m.

“A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of southern Walton County through 515 PM EDT…At 451 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was over Walnut Grove, or 8 miles southwest of Monroe, moving east at 20 mph. HAZARD…40 to 50 mph wind, pea sized hail and frequent cloud to ground lightning. SOURCE…Radar indicated. IMPACT…Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of light, unsecured objects. Locations impacted include… Monroe, Social Circle, Walnut Grove, Good Hope, Jersey, Herndonville, Ebenezer, Youth, and Pannell. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…People outdoors should seek shelter immediately. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
