Weather Alert: Cold Weather Advisory overnight Sunday into Monday

Wind Advisory issued for Sunday afternoon

If you had let last week’s spring-like weather fool you into packing away your winter wear, you may want to retrieve it immediately. Winter is not yet over – it still has a month to go.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather advisory from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23. In addition, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday. This is for central, east central, north central, northeast, northwest, southeast, and west central Georgia and includes Gwinnett, Walton and surrounding counties.

With temperatures in the low 20s overnight Sunday and Monday, and wind chills as low at 5 to 15 degrees, the NWS is urging people to make sure to wear warm clothing when venturing outside. They are urged to use caution while traveling outside and to wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

According to the NWS, the Wind Advisory warns of northwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills ranging from 10 degrees above zero to a few degrees below zero expected. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
