The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for portions of west-central Walton County, along with parts of Rockdale and Newton counties, until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
As of 6:04 p.m., radar indicated a severe thunderstorm near Gum Creek, about seven miles northeast of Conyers, moving northeast at 10 mph. The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to three-quarters of an inch in diameter, with the potential to damage roofs, siding and trees.
Communities in the warning area include Loganville, Walnut Grove, Between, Jersey, Youth and Gum Creek.
A separate Special Weather Statement remains in effect through 6:30 p.m. for much of Walton County and surrounding areas, including Monroe, warning of wind gusts up to 40 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy rainfall that could cause temporary street flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
The National Weather Service urges residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building during the warning. Those outdoors should seek shelter immediately, as lightning can strike well ahead of the storm. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution due to reduced visibility and the potential for hydroplaning.
