In what has become an annual event, Carver Middle School hosted a “Black History Museum” to celebrate African American heroes from Katherine Johnson of “Hidden Figures” fame to LeBron James who is the NBA’s leading scorer. Classroom door subjects were chosen and decorated by students.

Assistant Principal Kristin Fanning spearheaded this interactive student-driven experience. “Our 6th grade hall highlighted scientists and inventors. The 7th grade spotlighted high performing sports figures while our 8th graders focused on Civil Rights pioneers. Rounding out were our Connections classes which featured famous artists including chefs, musicians and painters.”

“We’re extremely proud and fortunate to have the Director of Middle Schools, Brian Hicks, Director of Curriculum Instruction, Denise Cobb and MAHS Assistant Principal Dr. Kimberly Brown judge the doors. Fanning continued. “I didn’t envy their job. Our students and teacher all did a fabulous job.”

The winning entries included:
6th grade: Ms. Lussi’s door on George Crum, inventor of the potato chip
7th grade: Ms. Alford and Ms. Diaz’s door highlighting various boxing champions
8th grade: Mr. Jansen’s door focusing on Ruby Bridges
Connections: Ms. Taylor from Chorus. Her original door had interactive music from various Black artists

“It’s important to know that Black history is everyone’s history.” Fanning noted. “We can’t forget the past sacrifices of all who have shaped us today.”
