You can also run, bike or row for a mile every hour for 24 hours at Compound Fitness Monroe
It is just two weeks until the 25th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the events of that day remain a defining moment in American history. For those who lived through that day, the memories are still vivid. For a generation born after 9/11, however, it is history they can only learn through the stories of others. Remembering what happened, honoring the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, and teaching younger generations about the courage, compassion and unity that followed is essential to ensuring that the lessons of that day are never forgotten.
With many of its members being current or former first responders, including one of its owners, former firefighter Jamie Leavel, Compound Fitness Monroe is hosting an event to honor those who lost their lives, raise funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, educate those who were not yet born or were too young to understand the enormity of that day, and foster community and health at the same time.
The event is a 24-hour, one-mile-per-hour 9/11 Memorial Challenge that will take place from 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, to 6 p.m. Saturday at Compound Fitness Monroe, located at 329 S. Lumpkin St. Participants can tackle the challenge solo or build a supportive team to run or walk one mile every hour for 24 hours.
The event is designed to test participants’ endurance, commitment and spirit while fostering community engagement and camaraderie. For those who prefer alternative forms of exercise, biking and rowing are also available, providing a variety of options to accommodate different preferences and abilities.
Each participant is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 in donations, with proceeds going directly to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
“This remarkable organization is dedicated to providing support and assistance to public servants—such as firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel—and their families who have been profoundly impacted by the tragic events of the 9/11 attacks,” organizers noted. “By participating in this event, you not only challenge yourself physically but also contribute to a noble cause that honors the sacrifices made by these heroes and helps ensure that their families receive the support they need during difficult times.
“Join us in making a difference, one mile at a time, as we come together to remember, support and uplift those who have given so much for our safety and freedom.”Click or tap on the image below for more details and to register.
