Flood Watch issued for Walton, Gwinnett and surrounding counties through Friday Night

Residents across Walton County, Gwinnett County and much of north and central Georgia should prepare for the possibility of flooding as the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch beginning Thursday morning and continuing through late Friday night.

Forecasters warn that multiple rounds of heavy rainfall are expected from Thursday through Friday evening as a tropical air mass moves across Georgia. Widespread rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are anticipated, with some locations potentially receiving 5 inches or more.

The watch includes Walton, Gwinnett, Barrow, Newton, Rockdale, Morgan, Oconee and several surrounding counties.

According to the National Weather Service, excessive rainfall could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying areas. Urban locations and areas with poor drainage are expected to be especially vulnerable to flash flooding due to the potential for high rainfall rates.

Officials encourage residents to stay informed by monitoring updated forecasts and weather alerts over the next several days. Those who live in flood-prone areas should be prepared to take action if Flood Warnings are issued.

Motorists are urged to use caution during periods of heavy rain and never drive through flooded roadways. Even a small amount of moving water can be dangerous and may conceal washed-out pavement or other hazards.

The Flood Watch remains in effect from Thursday morning through late Friday night. Residents can monitor weather conditions through the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies for the latest updates.
