Walton County first responders and volunteers from several local organizations recently showed just what a community can accomplish when they put their hearts into it.
More than 11,000 books were gifted to Walton County by Lt. Governor Burt Jones through his statewide book drive.
“We were connected through Georgia Reads because Monroe was a Georgia Reads Community Award winner last spring,” said Dessa Morris, vice president of Workforce Development at the Development Authority of Walton County. “So more than 11,000 books are headed into the hands of children and families in our community thanks to [Lt. Governor Burt Jones]’ Book Drive and [Georgia Reads] — and getting them here took a true team effort.”
That team effort caught the attention of Georgia Reads, a government organization whose purpose is to assist efforts to advance literacy across the state. The organization posted photographs and a message on social media recognizing the community effort.
“Walton County is showing us what community looks like! As recipients of the Lt. Governor’s Book Drive, Walton County picked up more than 11,000 books to help put more books into the hands of Georgia children and families. And they brought the fire department along to help! From fighting fires to helping build stronger readers, Walton County’s first responders showed up in a big way to make sure these books made it home.
We are so grateful for the partnership, dedication, and community spirit that made this book pickup possible. 11,000+ books means 11,000+ opportunities to inspire a love of reading!”
Morris said this was one of those Walton County moments that makes her incredibly proud.
“A huge thank you to [Walton County Government], [Walton County Fire Rescue], [City of Loganville – Government], [Loganville Rotary Club] ([Dan Curry]), [Development Authority of Walton County], [Monroe-Walton READS], and everyone who rolled up their sleeves to make this happen,” Morris said. “I love seeing people and organizations from across Walton County come together around something with such a lasting impact.”
Morris said the majority of the books will be shared with children all across the county next summer in conjunction with FISH4KIDS.
“Each child will be able to select books with the help of a local Rotary volunteer. All local Rotary clubs are on board to lead the charge. I actually meet with Monroe Rotary next month. Loganville and Social Circle are all set,” she said.
“Thousands of opportunities to spark a love of reading. And one pretty amazing community making it happen. Now comes the fun part — getting these books into the hands of our readers!”
