A local World War II veteran had a very special celebration in Walton County this past weekend. Calvin Dickerson, (aka C.K. Dickerson), turned 100 years old on Monday and his family had a special celebration for him the day before.

According to his daughter, Donna Herndon, he may be 100, but he really doesn’t look or behave anything like you would expect of a typical 100-year-old. Not that there are that many typical 100-year-olds around with whom to compare.

“My Daddy is the coolest thing since peanut butter,” she said. “He would pass for 80 I would think. He’s a wonderful dad. I am so blessed.”

Born Sept. 16, 1924, Dickerson spent his younger years in Toccoa, GA, with seven siblings. He served in the US Army, fought in Germany during WORLD WAR II and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. After the war, he worked for the Railroad for many years before becoming a truck driver hauling pipe through the twisting Kentucky and Tennessee mountain roads.

Dickerson lived in Social Circle for the last 40 plus years with his wife, Cealie Mae Dickerson, who passed away in April, 2024. He had the Honor of being Social Circle’s Grand Marshal at this year’s Independence Day Parade.

Dickerson now lives with his daughter in Jersey.

So what is his advice to anyone looking to emulate his longevity?

“Don’t Worry. It’s going to work out like it’s meant to and worrying will not change the outcome, it will only make you older.”
