The graduating Class of 2020 will finally have somewhat of a normal end to their school career. The Monroe Area High School Graduation Ceremony, in person, will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2020, at Hurricane Field. The MAHS Senior Virtual Award Ceremony will begin streaming live at 6:30 pm via the MAHS website at (www.monroeareahigh.org). You will be able to view the awards ceremony anytime after that.
Also to be honored for their achievements will be MAHS valedictorian Marisa Wilkins and MAHS salutatorian Katlyn Phelps.
Valedictorian – Marissa Wilkins
Marissa will be attending Emory University, majoring in Biology. In response to being named MAHS 2020 valedictorian, Marissa said, “I’m proud to see all my hard work pay off. There were times where I wanted to take breaks, so it feels good to know the effort is being rewarded.”
Marissa said she will miss seeing all her friends every day as well as all the great teachers she’s had over the years. “I’m looking forward to having new opportunities. I’m excited about research, meeting new people from all over the world, and becoming a more independent adult.”
Salutatorian – Katlyn Phelps
Katlyn will be attending the University of Georgia where she will be majoring in Biology on a pre-med track. In response to being named MAHS salutatorian, Katlyn said, “It’s relieving. Being the top of your class doesn’t happen in a month. I went into high school with determination and four years later my hard work paid off. I’m very proud of my accomplishments.”
Katlyn said she will miss how easy it is to stay connected to friends in high school, especially her best friend, Marissa, who she will miss being able to see every day. But she too is looking forward to college. “The chance to meet new people and achieve more of my life long goals.”
