With the race for State Senate District 42 being open in 2026, there is the potential for multiple candidates to enter the race.

One would-be contender has decided not to enter the fray. Current State Representative Rey Martinez (District 111) said he has decided not to run for State Senate and will instead concentrate on his re-election campaign next year.

“After much thought, prayers and communication with my family, I have decided not to run a political campaign for District 42,” Martinez said. “Instead I am running for re-election for my State Representative District 111 seat.”R

District 42 will be an open race next year with current incumbent Brian Strickland, a Republican, running for attorney general.

Former Marine Corps Captain Bret Dunn has announced he will run in the GOP primary for District 42.

“I have accomplished passing many conservative common sense legislation for my constituents and look forward to continuing to represent the residents of District 111,” Martinez said on his plans for next year.
