April 15 is PurpleUp Day in honor of military children in all branches of the military
At the Loganville City Council meeting on Thursday last week, Mayor Branden Whitfield read into the record and presented Cathy Hedges, District 10 president for the American Legion Auxiliary, a Proclamation declaring April 26 as the Month of the Military Child in honor and celebration of the more than 1.6 million military-connected children and youth for their service, sacrifice and resilience. It recognizes the unique challenges these young heroes face, including frequent moves, school changes, and long parental deployments.
Hedges shared some of sacrifices that military children make for their parents to serve in the military. Military families move on average every two to three years and many children experience the deployment of one or both parents.
April 15, 2026, is considered Purple Day, which is a day set aside to highlight the important role military children play in the armed forces community and acknowledges their strength and courage. In order to honor the military children, people are encouraged to wear purple which is a blend of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy blue.
