Mayor declares May 22, 2026 Poppy Day in the city of Loganville.

At Thursday’s city council meeting in Loganville,” Mayor Branden Whitfield read a Proclamation and presented it to Nancie Albin, poppy chairman of American Legion Post 233 Auxiliary, declaring May 22, 2026 as Poppy Day in the city. Around the world, the Friday before Memorial Day has been designated as National Poppy Day in honor of those who sacrifice while in service to their country.

Walton County Good Hope resident and humanitarian, Moina Michael, had vowed to wear a red poppy everyday as a remembrance of those who serve in war. An American educator, Michael initiated the campaign to make the red poppy a universal symbol of remembrance for World War I soldiers. Inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” she dedicated her life to supporting veterans and established the custom of wearing silk or paper poppies after she came up with the idea of selling poppies as a means to provide support for those veterans . As a result of her efforts, the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as a a remembrance of the war veterans in 1921. Today Units across the nation, distribute poppies to provide aid to the rehabilitation of veterans in need.

Michael died in 1944, prior to the end of World War II. She is buried in Rest Haven Cemetery in downtown Monroe and the city of Good Hope hosts a Spring Festival every year in her honor.
