New brewery and alcohol ordinance amendment on Monroe City Council agenda Tuesday

Monroe’s August 2024 City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov., Sept. 12, 2024 at Monroe City Hall at 215 N Broad St. The community is invited to attend.

Over the summer, the popular Southern Brewing Company in Monroe suddenly shut down with little advanced notice due to undisclosed issues. But it looks like another one is soon set to open up in the old Southern Brewing location. Ryan Keysar and Chad Davis, owners of Elixir Brew Company in Buford, go in front of the Monroe City Council Tuesday to iron out the details on their plan to bring Elixir Brew Co. to 123 Lumpkin Street in Monroe.

Also on the agenda is an amendment to the alcohol ordinance hours of operation that will allow for the sale of distilled spirits until 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2025. The referendum asking the public’s approval for the packaged sale of distilled spirits to be sold in the City of Monroe on last week’s ballot was approved with 72.34% of the voters approving the measure. However, no plans on the implementation are on the November City Council agenda.
