Current unemployment rate is 4.6 %
Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler announced last week that Northeast Georgia’s unemployment rate increased in December. The Northeast Georgia region includes Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Walton counties.
“In December, key indicators varied in the different regions and counties,” Butler said. “Although this month’s numbers fluctuated more than usual, a majority of the areas saw positive job growth that continues to be indicative of the resilience that Georgia has to offer during this economic rebound.”
In Northeast Georgia, the unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points, bringing the rate to 4.6 %. A year ago, the rate was 2.6 %. The unemployment rate in NE Georgia, however, is lower than the state level which was 5.6 % in December, 2020.
The labor force decreased in December by 2,095. The December total was 306,305. That number is down by 1,428 from the total from December 2019.
Northeast Georgia ended December with 292,149 employed residents. The number decreased by 2,446 in December and was down 7,543 as compared to last year.
Initial claims for unemployment increased by 17 % in December. When compared to last December, claims were up by about 332 percent.
In Walton County alone, initial unemployment claims went up by 141 from 771 in November to 912 in December 2020, an increase of 18.3 % in a month. In December 2019, it was just 140 in total, making an increase of 772 or 551.4 % in a year. Gwinnett, which is not in the NE Georgia District, had an increase of 171 in initial unemployment numbers this month, going from 7,729 in November to 7,900 in December 2020 for an increase of 2.2 %. Over the year, the increase was an increase of 6,719 or 568.9 % when compared to 2019.
The GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 4,156 active job postings in Northeast Georgia for December.
