Obituary: George William ‘Bill’ Smith, 90, of Monroe

George William “Bill” Smith of Monroe, died on Monday, August 21, 2017. He was born on May 11, 1927 to Julia Aycock Smith and Mahlon Cook Smith in Walton County, with one older brother Jack Smith, all of whom are predeceased. He grew up in Madison and Social Circle.

Visitation was Thursday evening (August 24, 2017) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A private burial will be in Covington, GA at Covington City Cemetery. A funeral was held at the First Baptist Church of Monroe on Friday, August 25, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Dr. Todd Ware and Rev. Greg Butler officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Myra Clark Smith of Monroe; his son, William Lee Smith and wife, Kim Mulkey-Smith of Monroe; his daughter, Cathy Meadows and husband, Greg of Monroe; his grandchildren, Julia Thames and husband, Kent of Charleston; Heath Meadows and wife, Haley of Monroe; Chris Meadows and wife, Erin of Atlanta, Katie Camp and husband, Jake of Monroe, and John Francis and wife, Corinne of Atlanta; his great grandchildren, Jeffrey Kent Thames, III, Jacob Camp, Madison Camp, Tori Meadows, Annie Meadows, Niko Francis, Jonas Francis, and Sibyl Francis; and his sister in law, Edith B. Smith.

He retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer W-4 from the U.S. Army National Guard after serving 31 years. He operated Malinda’s Restaurant for 15 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe, and a charter member of the Monroe Lions Club.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to the George Baker Educational Trust Fund of the Monroe First Baptist Church at PO Box 351, Monroe, GA 30655.
