The O’Kelly Memorial Library has been named the winner of the inaugural Mayor’s Reading Cup Challenge, a summer literacy competition organized through the Walton 250 celebration in partnership with the Azalea Regional Library System.
The 2026 Mayor’s Reading Cup trophy was presented to Mayor Whitfield on behalf of O’Kelly Memorial Library at the August Loganville City Council meeting by Development Authority of Walton County President/CEO Shane Short on behalf of the Walton 250 committee.
Whitfield said the honor showed there is a lot of community support for activities like the Mayor’s Reading Cup.
The Walton 250 Committee recognized Mayor Branden Whitfield and the O’Kelly Memorial Library team for their leadership in encouraging the community to participate.
The challenge encouraged students and adults throughout Walton County to read books, submit book reviews and complete library activities. O’Kelly Memorial Library emerged as the overall champion with 375 student participants and 105 adult participants.
The library earned 480 total points, more than twice the total of the next closest library. O’Kelly also recorded the highest number of books logged, the most book reviews submitted and the highest overall participation in the challenge.
