MONROE, Ga. (May 1, 2026) — A fast-moving emergency response involving a Walton County deputy and local EMS crew has earned top recognition from Piedmont Walton Hospital, after their actions helped save the life of a stroke patient.
Deputy David Stidham of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, along with Walton County EMS Paramedic Britt Sartain and EMT Alex Almand, were named the hospital’s May 2026 “First Friday Heroes.” The honor highlights their coordinated response to a medical emergency that resulted in a full recovery for the patient.
According to hospital officials, the incident began when Sheketra Terrell experienced symptoms of a stroke and realized she could not safely drive to Athens for treatment. She flagged down Deputy Stidham, who quickly assessed the situation and called 911.
Sartain and Almand arrived shortly after and transported Terrell to Piedmont Walton Hospital, where emergency and stroke care teams were already on standby. Terrell received the clot-busting medication tenecteplase (TNK) within 19 minutes of arrival — a critical window that helped prevent further brain damage.
“This is an incredible example of how quick thinking, teamwork and communication across agencies can completely change the outcome for a patient,” said Blake Watts, CEO of Piedmont Walton Hospital. “Deputy Stidham, Britt Sartain and Alex Almand acted confidently at every step, and because of their actions, the patient is thriving today.”
The recognition ceremony included an emotional moment when Terrell attended in person to thank the responders and hospital staff.
“I am here today because of them,” Terrell said. “From the moment they identified what was wrong, they didn’t hesitate. I’m so thankful for every person who played a role in my care.”
The First Friday Heroes program at Piedmont Walton Hospital honors first responders who demonstrate exceptional service, collaboration and commitment to the community.
