Scam alert: WCSO is warning residents of phone scam being perpetrated in their name

Walton County Sheriff’s Office is letting people know that scammers are calling people from a number that comes up as WCSO in an attempt to separate them from their money and they are again reaffirming that they will never call someone to let them know that there is a warrant in their name and to pay them in order to avoid arrest.

“Our deputies will never instruct you to post bond through a kiosk, purchase gift cards, send money through an app, wire funds, or pay in any other way over the phone. We’ve received a lot of calls regarding this lately. Don’t get scammed- hang up immediately,” WCSO wrote in a Facebook post, going on to explain that scammers can “spoof” phone numbers, making it appear that the call is coming from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office or another trusted number.

“Don’t trust the caller ID—trust the facts,” WCSO noted. “And remember… if you have a warrant and we’re looking for you, we won’t call asking for money. We’ll come find you.”
