The closure from 9. p.m. Friday, July 10 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 13, is for essential bridge preservation
WALTON COUNTY, GA – The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has issued an advisory for motorists that State Route (SR) 138 bridge over Big Flat Creek in Walton County will be temporarily closed for essential bridge preservation work beginning Friday, July 10, at 9 p.m. The bridge is expected to reopen by Monday, July 13, at 5 a.m., weather permitting.
According to officials, the temporary closure is necessary for crews to remove the top portion of the bridge deck using hydro blasting and install a Latex Modified Concrete Overlay, a treatment designed to protect the bridge deck, extend the service life of the structure, and improve long-term durability.
During the duration of the closure, motorists need to follow the signed detour routes. Depending on their direction of travel, drivers will be directed along SR 10 and SR 81. Portable message boards have been placed along SR 138 in advance of the closure to notify motorists of the upcoming traffic impacts. In addition law enforcement officers will be on hand to assist with traffic control and ensure an efficient detour. Passenger vehicles may use designated local routes, while commercial truck traffic will be directed to remain on the approved detour route.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we complete these important preservation improvements,” Jason Dykes, Georgia DOT District 1 Engineer said in a press release. “While weekend closures can be inconvenient, this work is critical to maintaining the long-term safety and reliability of the bridge while minimizing impacts to weekday commuters.”
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, expect additional travel time, and reduce speeds while traveling through the work zone and along detour routes.
