Collins, a Republican congressman who represents Georgia’s 10th congressional district, which includes Walton County, announced his run for the upper house of Congress on Monday, stating his intention to unseat incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff.
“Jon Ossoff does not represent Georgia’s values and has attacked our states’ best interests at every opportunity,” Collins said. “He’s voted to raise taxes on Georgia families, supercharge inflation, open our southern border and allow men to play in women’s sports.”
Ossoff was elected in 2020 in a blue wave of Democratic victories that saw the nation reject not only President Donald Trump’s bid for a second consecutive term but also most candidates associated with the controversial president, including Ossoff’s Republican opponent, David Perdue.
Six years later, however, with Trump back in office and the MAGA agenda riding high again, Collins is confident he can take back the seat for the GOP.
“This is Georgia’s moment,” Collins said. “This is the people’s time to take back control of this Senate seat, deliver on President Trump’s America First agenda and kick Jon Ossoff to the curb — and together, that’s exactly what we will do next November.”
Collins will first have to make it through the GOP primary next spring, however, and could face a crowded field of Republican hopefuls, including U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, who already announced his candidacy, as well as prospective candidates including U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, U.S. Rep. Rick McCormick and former Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley, the son of legendary University of Georgia coach Vince Dooley.
If Collins wins the primary, he would face Ossoff in November.
Collins was elected to the U.S. House in 2022 and has been a loyal supporter of Trump and his agenda ever since. Collins emphasized many of his legislative priorities since his election, including the Laken Riley Act.
Collins’ official state congressional office is in downtown Monroe.
