Update: 85-year-old Monroe resident succumbs to the injuries received in Friday’s car accident

Georgia State Patrol report that the victim of a car accident on Michael Etchison Road in front of Zaxby’s in Monroe on Friday did not survived his injuries. GSP Trooper First Class Cal Barton confirmed that Wesley Sheffield, 85, of Monroe, succumbed to the injuries he received in the car accident, passing away on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017.

Two people were injured Friday following a serious car wreck on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd at the intersection with Michael Etchison Road.

According to Trooper First Class Cal Barton with Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at about 1:10 p.m. on Nov. 10, 2017, when a black 2005 Hyundai XG 350, driven by Wesley Sheffield, 85, of Monroe, traveling west on Highway 138 (MLK Jr. Blvd) turned in front of a red Ford Fusion, driven by Sache Jones, 35, from Centerville (Houston County.)

“Ms. Jones was traveling east on 138 and Mr. Sheffield was traveling west, attempting to turn left onto Michael Etchison,” Barton said. “He turned in front of her, on a sold green light. He did not have an arrow, according to witnesses who were immediately behind him.”

Barton said Sheffield was transported by ambulance to the helipad at Clearview Regional Medical Center where he was airlifted directly to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital. Jones was taken to Clearview Regional by ambulance.
