Update: GBI release name of man who died in officer-involved shooting in Loganville area Friday

Update

Gwinnett County, GA (7/22/2022) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that the person who died in an early morning officer involved shooting in the Loganville area Friday was Leonard Hollingsworth, 63, of Loganville. No officers were injured during the Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT incident. The GBI has been called in to investigate.

According to a press release from the GBI, Preliminary information indicates that at about 1:20 a.m., 911 received a call from 3020 Templeton Lane, Loganville, Gwinnett County, Georgia, concerning a dispute between roommates.  The 911 caller said his roommate, Hollingsworth had fired a gun and was preventing him from leaving the home. When officers responded, Hollingsworth ran back into the home with a firearm in his hand. The roommate was able to leave the home. At that time, SWAT officers were called to the home and spent several hours negotiating with Hollingsworth for several hours. At some point, Hollingsworth allegedly pointed a firearm at officers at which time two officers fired their guns, hitting Hollingsworth.  He died on scene. 

The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy and the GBI will conduct an independent investigation. The case will then be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.  
GBI reports that this is 69th officer involved shooting that the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2022.

Update

Gwinnett Police Police Department released the following statement regarding the SWAT response to a domestic call in the early morning hours of Friday, July 22, 2022 that resulted in an officer involved shooting.

Around 1:20 AM officers from Bay Creek Precinct responded to a domestic call between roommates on Templeton Ln.  The male victim relayed to police that the suspect had discharged a firearm and was preventing him from leaving.  When officers arrived, they located the victim in the driveway being prevented from leaving by the suspect.  The suspect had a firearm in his hands when officers arrived.  Upon the arrival of officers, the victim was able to leave, and the suspect retreated into the residence with the firearm.  

Officers on scene obtained warrants for aggravated assault and criminal damage and determined an elderly female was still inside the residence.  Supervisors on scene determined SWAT was needed around 2:00 AM. 

Attempts were made to negotiate with the suspect for over 5 hours.  During that time the suspect pointed firearms at the SWAT Bearcat several times and made numerous statements he was going to shoot officers.

Just before 7:15 AM the suspect came to the back door and pointed a firearm at SWAT officers in the backyard.  Two SWAT officers fired at the suspect at that time.  The suspect was deceased at the scene.  The GBI has been called out to handle the officer involved shooting investigation.

LOGANVILLE, GA – (July 22, 2022) Gwinnett County Police report that one person has been fatally shot after SWAT responded to a domestic call at Templeton Ln. and Templeton Dr. in the Loganville area of Gwinnett County.
