Update: Georgia State Patrol report that the victim in a wreck in Loganville on Friday afternoon was a pedestrian working the flag in a construction zone on Sharon Church Road.
According to GSP Trooper First Class Cal Barton, the accident happened at about 1:20 p.m. on April 21 when John Wheeler, 89, of Loganville was driving his 2012 Chrysler van west on Sharon Church Road within a construction zone. Corey Woods, 34, of Austell, was a pedestrian flagman standing in the westbound lane with the stop sign turned for the westbound traffic.
“Wheeler failed to obey the stop sign, striking Woods with the front of his vehicle. After impact with the pedestrian, Wheeler’s vehicle struck an unoccupied dump truck in the westbound lane,” Barton said, adding that Woods was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center by road transportation with serious injuries. “Wheeler was cited for failure to obey authorized person directing traffic.”
Barton said Wheeler was not injured.
