WALTON COUNTY (Oct. 27, 2025) Taxes are not a friendly topic of conversation in Walton County at the moment, especially in the light of the tax increase that has the community even going so far as to attempt a recall on the Walton County Board of Commission Chair over them. However, the Walton County Chamber of Commerce is urging voters to not let that influence their vote on renewing the Education Local Option Sales Tax (ELOST) that is on the ballot this November.
This is the renewal of a one-penny sales tax that officials say funds vital improvements for local public schools.
“This is not a new tax — it’s a renewal that allows our community to continue supporting students through critical investments,” the chamber noted.
Such as:
- Renovating and repairing existing school buildings
- Expanding classrooms and adding new facilities as needed
- Upgrading technology, equipment, and school buses
- Improving safety, HVAC systems, and playgrounds
In the case of the ELOST, every penny collected stays in the county to benefit public schools – Walton County and Social Circle — it does not go to the city or county government.
According to the Chamber, supporting ELOST makes sense:
- It helps keep property taxes lower
- It shares the cost among homeowners, renters, and visitors
- It ensures excellent schools that drive economic growth and quality of life
