A month after the new, expanded John’s Supermarket was revealed to the public, the new restaurant at the front of the store, Bistro South, began serving its brand of southern food. Monday this week, Bistro South’s first customers got to sit down in the restaurant and get a taste of Chef Michael’s Thompson’s brand of southern cuisine.
Greg Thompson, the owner of John’s Supermarket, said they were excited to be able to open up the restaurant and happy that it was being so well supported already. He said his son was being kept busy with figuring out the correct flow, which is always the case in opening a new restaurant. They are serving the lunchtime crowd at the moment before opening it up for longer hours. Bistro South is currently serving from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but will soon expand to add breakfast.
The tables give the correct social distance to keep customers in their own space while dining. Some of the items on the menu offer a meat and one, two or three vegetables, wing or chicken tender baskets as well as salads and sandwiches. These items can be served with your favorite southern beverage, lemonade or sweet tea, or if you prefer you can order domestic or craft beer or a glass of wine.
John’s supermarket is located at 416 S Broad Street and the restaurant fronts S Broad Street. Above the restaurant and store are loft apartments, soon to be available to residents who like the idea of downtown living. Eighteen months ago, Darrell Everidge, of Darrell Productions, caught up with Thompson to find out just what his plans were and shared this Youtube of those plans. It is good to now get to see them come to fruition.
