If you haven’t yet registered to vote in the primary election for the 2018 General Election, you may want to take steps to do so now. You have until Tuesday, April 24 to register. The primary election will take place on May 22, 2018, with a runoff on July 24 should it be required. The General Election will take place on Nov. 6, 2018 with runoff for county or state races should any be required on Dec. 10, 2018 and on Jan. 8, 2019 should any be required in federal races.
Early voting begins on April 30 and ends on May 18. There will be no early voting on a Saturday except for May 12. Polls will be open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, at your local precinct.
In Walton County races, three candidates, all Republicans, qualified to replace District 1 Commissioner Tommy Stringer who passed away on Feb. 17 of this year during his term of office. Walton County Chairman Kevin Little said the Republican winner of this primary would be appointed to serve as the District 1 Commissioner prior to the term of the office to begin in January. Bo Warren, Chris Yancey and Roger Hale qualified to run for this post. No Democrat candidate qualified. Incumbent commissioners Lee Bradford and Jeremy Adams qualified unopposed in their Republican primaries for Commission Districts 4 and 5 respectively and neither positions had any primary qualifiers from any other party.
In the Walton County Board of Education races, Brian Krawczyk (Republican) and Simoen Kapers (Democrat) qualified for District 1 to replace current District 1 BOE member Lynn Hill who did not qualify. Republican Karen Brown qualified unopposed for BOE District 2 to replace Incumbent Jeremy Kilburn who also did not qualify. In District 5, the democratic candidate withdrew leaving on Republican incumbent Thomas Gibson on the ballot.
At the state level, Sen. Burt Jones (R-District 25), Rep. Tom Kirby (R-Loganville), Rep. Bruce Williamson (R-Monroe) and Rep. Brett Harrell (R-Snellville) all qualified unopposed in the primaries, with no Democratic opposition in November. Harrell’s District 106 includes parts of Loganville in Gwinnett County.
At the federal level, U.S. Rep. Jody Hice (G-10) faces two Republican opponents in the May Primary. The winner will face off against the winner of three potential Democratic candidates in November. Running against Hice in the Republican Primary are Bradly Griffin, and Joe Hunt. Democratic candidates are Chalis Montgomery, Richard Dien Winfield and Tabitha A. Johnson-Green.
Most other statewide positions from the governor on down have challengers, if not in the primaries at least in the November midterms.
